2 Jan 2023 The adoption or amendment of charters is subject to such limitations as may be prescribed by the Legislature, and no charter or any ordinance passed under said charter shall contain any provision inconsistent with the Constitution of the State, or of the general laws enacted by the Legislature of this State. Article XI, Section 5, of the Texas Constitution

This means that we can write ordinances and other laws but they cannot conflict with the Constitution or State Codes (Laws)

4 Jan 2023 Technology is my best assistant. There may not be classes or training for some of the things a councilmember must do or know, but there is Google. With over 1200 incorporated municipalities in the state of Texas, there are many examples of success and of failure. Curiosity of the successes and failures leads me to ask many questions. Many of the answers are online. I will look at dozens of cities, ordinances, finances, economic plans, meetings, etc for clues on how we may also succeed.

5 Jan 2023 "If I knew then what I know now." As I write this I realize how little I knew months ago. Each dilemma that we face, causes me to review how we got to the present case. It is then that I gain the knowledge and advice to apply going forward.
